Airlines of the world: Thai Airways International
Thai Airways International is the national Thai airline with its main base at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The company was one of the original members of Star Alliance.
Thai Airways International was founded in 1960 as a joint venture between Thai Airways and SAS Company. SAS was bought out in 1977, so the company was 100% owned by the Thai government. The two companies work together, and they both are members of Star Alliance.
The company's first flight was on 11 May 1960. Thai started as "Thai International" and "Thai Airways Domestic". Later, the two merged to the current Thai Airways International.
As the main part of the tourist traffic to the country comes from Europe, Thai had little traffic to North America, where the company cooperates with Lufthansa. On 1 May 2005 began, however, Thai a non-stop route Bangkok-New York JFK (route TG790/791) with its new Airbus A340-500. With a flight time of 17 hours was the fastest direct flight from Southeast Asia to the U.S. East Coast. This was also one of the longest international flights.
Thai Airways International is today a listed company. The Thai government has always had an interest of over 50%.
